THE ROYAL ACADEMY SELECTS AND HANGS "JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT" AT THIS YEARS SUMMER EXHIBITION.

31/05/11
For the second year running the Royal Academy has selected another one of Christopher's milk float paintings for this years show. Royal Academicians Christopher Le Brun and Michael Craig-Martin were on the selection committee and had to plow through over 12,000 works submitted for consideration this year. The show provides an unrivalled opportunity for exhibitors to sell their work and have it seen by the 200,000 visitors that the exhibition draws during its three-month run.The title of the painting is taken from a song by The KLF from their 1991 album "The White Room". This track was later reworked and rereleased, featuring the vocals of American country star Tammy Wynette, eventually reaching number two in the UK charts. Christopher felt the title summed up all that is timeless about the humble British milkman who with their indomitable spirit usually got all deliveries completed and ensured that the nation could still have it's cup of tea! "I arranged the crowd of milkmen to resemble a monument of standing stones... proud and imperishable".
Once again, the BBC are featuring the summer show in a Culture Show special, presented by Alastair Sooke and Brian Sewell, due to be broadcast on BBC 2 on Thursday 16th June (19:00 / 23:20).
